Aunt Geraldine's Chocolate Cake

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Grease and flour a 9x13 inch pan.
  3. Cream together 8 tablespoons of butter, 2 cups of sugar, and 3 eggs until light and fluffy.
  4. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, beating well.
  5. In a separate bowl, sift together 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon baking soda.
  6. Alternately add the dry ingredients and 1 cup of buttermilk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.
  7. Melt 4 ounces of chocolate and stir into the batter until evenly distributed.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove the pan from the oven and let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack.
  10. Cool completely before frosting.
